4-Year-Old Girl Hospitalized after Multi-Vehicle Crash near Highway 46

PASO ROBLES, CA (June 14, 2018) – A mother and her child were injured late Thursday morning after their vehicle was rear-ended on Highway 101 by a distracted driver.

The collision took place at 11:00 AM on the Highway 101 off-ramp near Highway 46. Lindsay Beery and her 4-year-old daughter, Olivia Beery, were passing through Paso Robles from Seaside with their Chihuahua, Sophie. The traffic came to a complete stop at a red light when Lindsay’s automobile was rear-ended by a Honda CRV.

Lindsay’s vehicle slammed into the car directly in front of her, and then immediately spun out and rolled down the embankment, and into a ravine. Olivia sustained severe injuries, while Lindsay suffered from unspecified injuries. Sophie was reported missing right after the collision.

A total of three vehicles were involved in the collision, which was suspected to be a result of distracted driving. Lindsay claimed that the Honda driver might have been texting and failed to observe the stopped traffic. The preliminary investigation also determined that Olivia had climbed out of her car seat, and into the back of the car shortly before the incident.

The 4-year-old was transported to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo but was later transferred to the Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, near Fresno. She is currently being treated after sustaining several broken ribs, a punctured lung, and knocked out front teeth. An MRI shows that she also has a fracture on a vertebra in her spine, and will need to be in a body cast for six weeks.

With the help of a group of residents in rural Paso Robles, Olivia was reunited with Sophie five days after the crash. The girl had been looking for her beloved dog whenever she would wake up between sedation. No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
