Cop Car Clipped by Train near 15th Street Southwest
AUBURN, WA (September 5, 2018) – A Sumner Police officer sustained a minor injury when his vehicle was involved in a train collision on Perimeter Road, late Wednesday evening. His identity was not immediately released to the public.
According to troopers with the Washington State Patrol, the incident occurred at around 11:10 PM near 15th Street Southwest. The officer was parking in his patrol vehicle, near the railroad tracks. He was reportedly monitoring a construction site when the vehicle was clipped by a northbound freight train.
Luckily, the vehicle was only clipped and the officer’s injuries were considered minor. Auburn Police officers and medics from the Valley Regional Fire Authority arrived at the scene. He was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
Investigators stated that there is no protection arm on that side of the tracks to warn motorists regarding the train’s proximity to surrounding vehicles.
Crossing or being parked near the railroad is always dangerous. Be sure to always stop, look, and listen, especially if there is a railroad crossing, and keep a safe distance. If the railroad crossing signs come down, this means a train is approaching and you should not cross the train tracks to the other side. Wait until the train has passed to cross the street safely.
