Crash at Fifth Street and G Street Injures Officer in Union City
UNION CITY, CA (August 05, 2019) – A hit-and-run crash at Fifth Street and G Street left a Union City police officer injured Friday night.
The incident occurred at about 9:30 p.m. The Union City detectives said that officers from a different law enforcement agency were chasing a blue Toyota Prius. After that, the pursuit ended when the vehicle entered Union City.
The Union City police officer saw the Prius speeding and driving in the wrong direction on Whipple Road. However, he did not chase the vehicle due to safety reasons.
As per the detectives, many police departments will end a chase or not even start one if they believe that doing so would put the public in danger.
The officer subsequently alerted his nearby colleagues. After that, the detectives said the Prius broadsided a marked patrol car. The patrol vehicle lost control and ended up in a driveway.
The officer sustained head injuries from the crash. However, he is now recovering from home. In addition, the injured party is a veteran officer of 17 years and a training officer.
On the other hand, the driver and a passenger of the Prius ran away after the crash. The officers locked down the area and searched for them. However, they did not locate the two suspects. In addition, they haven’t released any descriptions of the two suspects.
A third person, a young man, remained in the vehicle. However, the officers did not arrest him.
In the meantime, the Union City police are looking for the registered owner of the Prius. However, the vehicle was not reported stolen.
