Car Catches Fire after Crashing into Bushes on 580 Freeway in Oakland
OAKLAND, CA (February 28, 2019) – A woman was killed and a man was seriously injured following a fiery crash on 580 Freeway.
The crash happened around 4:05 a.m. on eastbound 580 Freeway. According to police, the accident was located near the 98th Avenue on-ramp, close to the Oakland Zoo.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a Jeep Cherokee was traveling eastbound. Soon after, it crashed into some bushes on the right shoulder of the freeway and caught fire.
The female passenger of the car suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not yet been released pending notification of her family members.
The man driving the car was taken to a hospital with major injuries.
Two right lanes of the freeway were shut down until around 7:20 a.m. while the rescue operation was being conducted.
It is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. An investigation is still ongoing.
