Wrong-Way Driver Dies in Novato Head-On Crash
NOVATO, CA (April 16, 2019) – A woman was killed following a wrong-way crash Tuesday evening in Novato, CHP officials said.
The fatal crash happened around 9:19 p.m. on Highway 37 at Atherton Avenue off-ramp.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a sedan was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 37. It nearly hit two CHP motorcycle officers who were responding to 911 calls, but swerved and collided head-on with an eastbound vehicle behind them.
The woman driving against traffic was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of her family members.
The driver she hit suffered minor to moderate injuries, the CHP said.
Police shut down part of eastbound Highway 37 between Highway 101 and Atherton Avenue while they worked on the investigation. The highway was reopened roughly around 12:30 a.m.
