Gregorio Chayrez Arrested for DUI Collision near Wellsian Way
RICHLAND, WA (May 28, 2018) – One man was fatally injured after a wrong-way driver struck his vehicle on the westbound Interstate 182, on Monday morning. The victim was identified as 55-year-old Norman Simpson of Yakima.
29-year-old Gregorio Chayrez of Pasco was driving east in the westbound lanes of the I-182 in a Dodge Caliber hatchback, near milepost 4 and Wellsian Way. He then struck a westbound Ford Escort hatchback, driven by Simpson, around 7:00 AM.
Emergency responders pronounced Simpson dead at the scene. Two passengers from Wisconsin were sitting in Simpson’s car, 53-year-old Kathryn Simpson and 20-year-old Sabra Simpson. Neither was injured in the collision. Chayrez sustained injuries and was treated on the scene. The Simpsons were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, while Chayrez was not.
After treatment, Chayrez was booked into the Benton County Jail. Officials with the Washington State Patrol continue to investigate the fatal incident, and have confirmed that drugs and/or alcohol are contributing factors. Charges are pending against Chayrez.
