Seven Children Killed in State Route 33 Deadly DUI Crash
Fresno, CA (April 30, 2021) – On New Year’s Day, nine, including seven children died in a DUI crash on State Route 33.
The children were between 6 and 15 years old and were members of two related families. They were traveling in a Ford F-150 truck with a 34-year-old female driver.
Apparently, a Dodge driven by a 28-year-old driver was southbound on the highway when it veered onto the dirt shoulder. The driver overcorrected and drifted into the southbound lane, where it hit the Ford.
Subsequently, the Ford burst into flames on the dirt shoulder, and the Dodge stopped straddling both lanes of the highway.
Reports said the Dodge driver had a blood-alcohol level more than double the state’s legal limit. Also, he did not have a driver’s license at the time of the accident.
Moreover, officers said both of the drivers had marijuana in their systems.
“The NTSB is awaiting the results of further toxicology testing for both drivers and will evaluate the potential role of alcohol and drug impairment in this crash. Medical and human performance evaluations will also examine whether driver fatigue, distraction, or medical conditions were factors in the crash,” the preliminary report said.
The NTSB and the California Highway Patrol continue to investigate the cause of the head-on crash.
Officers also said that weather or other road conditions did not appear to be a factor in the fatal incident.
