14-Year-Old Boy Hit and Injured by Car on West Lincoln Avenue Near North 24th Avenue
YAKIMA, WA (February 5, 2018) – A 14-year-old boy was critically injured in a pedestrian accident on West Lincoln Avenue and North 24th Avenue, around 5:30 PM on Monday night.
Nicholas Sotelo of Yakima was crossing West Lincoln Avenue and heading north in a marked crosswalk, said reports. According to police spokesman Mike Bastinelli, two cars were approaching the intersection to where the young teen was crossing.
One of the two cars in the westbound lanes stopped while the second car, a Cadillac Escalade, did not. Driver, 71-year-old Yakima woman Penny Posey, passed the other car in the right hand lane, and struck the boy. Sotelo sustained major injuries and was taken to Astria Regional Medical Center, and was later transferred to the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He is currently in the intensive care unit in critical condition.
Police closed the street and rerouted traffic for more than two hours with investigation took place. Posey has not yet been cited since the accident is under investigation.
Lt. Shawn Boyle of the Yakima Police Department said that drugs and alcohol are not factors in this serious pedestrian accident. This incident happened near a prior fatal pedestrian accident, where 96-year-old Bernice Mackarness was struck and killed by a driver.
