LA Sheriff’s Deputy Relieved of Duty for Alleged Multi-Car DUI Crash near Avenue Q-6 East
PALMDALE, CA (June 17, 2018) – A rookie deputy was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of DUI after his pickup plowed through several parked vehicles. The 24-year-old sheriff’s deputy, identified as Nicholas Smith of Palmdale, had only been with the department for six months.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at about 2:45 AM on 30th Street East, near Avenue Q-6 East. A 2014 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by Smith, was heading northbound when he allowed his vehicle to drift to the right. He struck several vehicles, initiating a chain reaction that involved five parked cars. No injuries were reported.
The off-duty deputy remained at the scene and waited for emergency personnel to arrive. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Palmdale station were dispatched to the scene and arrested Smith on suspicion of DUI. At 7:35 AM, authorities confirmed that Smith was relieved of his duties.
