Fatality Reported in Long Beach Big Rig Crash
Long Beach, CA (August 9, 2024) – Nicholas Kusmich, 50, of Long Beach, was killed in a Hayes Avenue collision Wednesday afternoon.
It was about 4:45 p.m. when the collision happened at the intersection with Anaheim Street.
Troopers said a 2020 Kenworth tractor-trailer carrying a shipping container was eastbound on Anaheim Street. The big rig turned left onto Hayes Avenue to travel north.
At the same time, a mini motorcycle driven by Kusmich was westbound on the north curb of Anaheim Street. It collided into the passenger side of the big rig while it was turning left.
Nicholas Kusmich was killed at the crash scene and the big rig driver stayed and cooperated with the authorities.
Officers said distracted driving is being investigated as a possible factor while speed and driving under the influence were not.
