The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies managed to stop and bring back the driver to the crash scene.
Meanwhile, the Bellingham Fire and Whatcom County Fire District 8 crews both responded to the scene. Also, responders took Nicholas Jefferson through an ambulance to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center. According to them, Jefferson sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.
As a result, Ferndale Road and Marine Drive have been shut down until around 9:30 p.m. as the officers investigated the scene.
More Details on the Crash in Bellingham
The WSP revealed that a green 1999 Honda Accord traveled west on Marine Drive at a high rate of speed. Then, it tried to drive past another vehicle and then lost control. As a result, the Honda went off the road, hit a ditch, and landed on its roof on the west side of Ferndale Road.
The officers confirmed that the crash was due to improper passing, speed, and driving under the influence. WSP investigators also noted that 29-year-old Toby Solomon of Bellingham failed to wear his seatbelt. Meanwhile, Nicholas Jefferson wore his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The authorities detained Solomon and booked him into Whatcom County Jail. He’s been charged with suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular assault.
Solomon also had warrants out for his arrest for suspicion of possession of a dangerous weapon. Moreover, he failed to appear in court on a 3rd-degree driving while license suspended charge.
When behind the wheel of a vehicle, it is your responsibility to ensure the safety of yourself and others around you. Moreover, it is important to always drive within the posted speed limit. Also, slow down if you see traffic stalling ahead to avoid hitting other vehicles.
