Speeding Wrong-Way Driver Dies in Head-On Crash on 5 Freeway in National City
NATIONAL CITY, CA (January 13, 2019) – One person was killed following a wrong-way head-on crash Sunday afternoon in National City.
The fatal crash happened around 4:06 p.m. on southbound 5 Freeway at Civic Center Drive.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a black Nissan Versa was traveling the wrong way at a high rate of speed when it collided head-on with a white minivan. The wrong-way driver was killed in the crash.
Another person was seriously injured and left trapped inside the minivan. The patient was eventually rescued and rushed to UCSD Medical Center in critical condition.
Three left lanes of the freeway were blocked for several hours while the rescue and clearing operations were being conducted. All lanes were re-opened roughly around 7:00 p.m.
No identifying information on either party is being released at this time. This incident is still under investigation.
