One Dead and One Injured in Sedan Vs. Semi Crash on I-70 Near Colfax
AURORA, CO (January 26, 2018) – The Colorado State Patrol reported a fatal accident on Interstate 70 near Colfax on early Friday morning around 3 AM.
38-year-old Nathaniel Hicks was driving a 1998 Honda Civic the wrong way on I-70, when he crashed into a semi-tanker-truck head-on. The Honda was stuck under the semi-truck, and Hicks was pronounced dead on the scene.
CSP Trooper Gary Cutler said that the 47-year-old man that was driving the truck, was taken to the hospital for injuries and later released.
It took officials several hours to remove the vehicle from under the semi, get the truck uprights, and move it off the road. There were traffic backups during the morning rush, but no extended highway closures.
Police continue to investigate the fatal crash, but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved. They are trying to determine where Hicks entered the 70 freeway the wrong way, and what the cause was.
Wishing the family and friends of Nathaniel Hicks courage and support in this tragic time.
