Injuries Reported in Garden Grove Auto Accident on Highway 89

 
GARDEN GROVE, CA (August 2, 2022) – Friday, a head-on crash on Highway 89 involved Nathanial Smotrys and Stephen Reikes.
 
The incident occurred at around 5:28 p.m. on Highway 89. According to reports, 18-year-old Nathanial Smotrys of Garden Grove drove a 2005 GMC Sierra. He traveled north on Highway 89, south of Sierraville, with one passenger.
 
Meanwhile, 54-year-old Stephen Reikes from Livermore drove a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. They traveled southbound on Highway 89, also south of Sierraville with two passengers.
 
According to reports, Smotrys fell asleep and went into the southbound lane. Then, Reikes came around a blind curve and noticed the other vehicle completely in his lane. Thus, Reikes veered into the northbound lane to avoid the crash. Then, Smotrys woke up and found out his mistake. He veered back into the northbound lane and both vehicles collided head-on.

As a result, both vehicles rolled to the low side of the road. Then, it came to rest against a rock wall on the east side of the highway.
 
Then, multiple good Samaritans and off-duty law enforcement/medical personnel helped the parties. Then, Sierraville Fire arrived on the scene. USFS and Truckee Fire also came to the scene and helped the injured parties.
 
Afterward, responders took five of the six parties to Renown Medical Center via multiple helicopters for serious injuries.
 
Then, the crash shut down both directions of Highway 89 for approximately an hour.
 
Furthermore, the authorities urged anyone with information about this incident to call the California Highway Patrol at (530) 252-1900.
