Do Motorized Scooters and Mopeds Require Liability Insurance?

Motorized scooters and mopeds have become a popular way to travel around in heavy traffic states. Using this alternative mode of transportation does relief some congestion on the road, but also saves many drivers from increasing gas prices. Each state regulates what type of motorized scooters or mopeds require liability insurance, so make sure to check your city’s regulations before riding one.

Moped and Motorized Scooter Classifications

The engine size will be a main factor when states determine if your moped or motorized scooter is classified as a motorcycle and will require insurance, a license and registration. DMV continues to note that in most states, if the engine on your moped or scooter is 50cc or larger, your moped will likely be categorized as a motorcycle and require motorcycle insurance.

Also, keep in mind that many insurance providers place conditions on moped insurance coverages. Depending on the insurance carrier and the state where you live, this may include wearing a helmet or equipping your engine with reflectors and lights.

Insurance Coverage Options

Is is always recommended to have insurance to protect yourself of any potential risks on the road, which may include damages to your moped and bodily injuries that may even result in death. If motorized scooters or mopeds require liability insurance in the state you reside in, here are a few recommended coverages and their purposes:

  • State required liability – to cover bodily and property damages to others in an accident you caused;
  • Collision Coverage – pays for damages to your vehicle in the event of an accident (no matter fault);
  • Comprehensive Coverage – covers when your vehicle is damaged as a result of an incident other than a collision such as theft, vandalism , flood or fire;
  • Med-Pay – pays for medical expenses regardless of fault;
  • Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) – if you’re involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver, damages such as medical, loss of earnings and pain and suffering will be covered. Not all states offer this option to moped riders.

Accident Statistics

In high traffic states, it has been reported by the NCBI that 90% of drivers involved in a moped accidents were uninsured and only 17% of all riders wore helmets. These numbers could also be a reflection of the state law requirements regarding classification of motorized transportation and if insurance was required.

NCBI continues to report helmet use is an important factor in reducing the severity of injuries from motorcycle and moped crashes . Un-helmeted riders are 3–4 times more likely to pass away from their injuries. For the riders who survive, they usually sustain severe and permanent injuries, along with a high amount of medical bills.

Understanding which motorized scooters or mopeds require liability insurance may prevent hardship you may experience as a result of an unforeseen accident.
