1 Critically Injured and 5 Hurt in School Bus Accident on Lakewood Drive Southwest at Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest
LAKEWOOD, WA (June 21, 2018) – One person was in critical condition and five others were injured after a car and school bus collision on Lakewood Drive Southwest Thursday afternoon.
The last crash happened just before 4:00 PM at the intersection of Lakewood Drive Southwest and Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest. The area was closed to traffic for some time. Pierce County sheriff’s deputies saw and attempted to pull over a 36-year-old man, who had a Department of Corrections warrant for his arrest. The deputies had been chasing the car before losing it in Lakewood near 140th Avenue Southwest.
One of the officers saw the car hit a school bus that wasn’t carrying any students and another car, but the vehicle kept going. The car eventually crashed at Lakewood Drive and Steilacoom. A total of four cars and the empty bus were involved in the multiple vehicle collision.
One person was critically injured after being pulled out from a vehicle, West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Jenny Weekes said. Another victim suffered significant injuries and four other people sustained minor injuries.
It was established that the suspect in the stolen car is not doing well, and that the 36-year-old man was not wearing his seat belt.
Lakewood police is investigating the crash.
