Mom and Daughter in Patterson Accident on Interstate 5 and Interstate 580
PATTERSON, CA (March 4, 2021) – Wednesday, a mother and her 9-year-old daughter died in a distracted driving crash on Interstate 5 and Interstate 580.
Moreover, the incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5, south of Interstate 580.
According to reports, the woman and the child rode as passengers in a Toyota sedan. The car rode in the fast lane southbound on Interstate 5.
25-year-old Daniel Vega, the Toyota driver, said that the vehicle sustained a flat tire. Thus, he slowed down and started to pull into the center median when the crash occurred.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Catarino Torres Jr. of Modesto, the box truck driver, “admitted to reaching for something within his truck and looked away momentarily,” Olsen added. “When he looked up he struck the right rear of the Toyota.”
As a result, the box truck crashed with the Toyota, and broke off the part of the right side of the car.
According to reports, the 30-year-old woman and 9-year-old girl succumbed to death at the scene.
Additionally, responders took a 4-year-old girl in the Toyota was taken to the hospital but was uninjured, Olsen revealed.
Subsequently, responders took Vega to a hospital with minor injuries. Torres remained uninjured.
The three lanes on southbound Interstate 4 remained open while officers investigate. The lanes reopened by 7:00 p.m.
“Just looking away for a few second out here on our freeways at 70 mph, the vehicle travels approximately a football field,” Olsen revealed. “Unfortunately two people lost their lives today; this did not need to happen.”
