Monica Cantu Killed While Trying to Help in Paso Robles Crash
PASO ROBLES, CA (July 16, 2019) – A Good Samaritan identified as Monica Cantu died while helping an injured driver in a Paso Robles crash early Monday morning.
The California Highway Patrol said an initial collision happened just before 2:00 a.m. A wrong-way driver collided with a vehicle on northbound Highway 101 near the Spring Street exit.
Cantu and 49-year-old Raul A. Gomez, both of Paso Robles, stopped to help the person injured in that crash. After that, a Ford Transit van came through the area. As a result, debris from the first crash ripped off the van’s tire, causing the driver to lose control. Cantu and Gomez tried to run out of the way. However, they were hit by the van.
Cantu, a Cal Poly employee, suffered blunt force trauma. As a result, paramedics took her to a nearby hospital where she died.
Gomez suffered major injuries prompting emergency responders to take him to Sierra Vista Regional Medical in San Luis Obispo for treatment.
Officials identified the person injured in the initial collision as 62-year-old Anne Neville-Olson of Atascadero. She sustained moderate injuries.
Officers said the wrong-way driver who caused the initial crash was 40-year-old Pedro Alvarado-Torres of King City. Alvarado-Torres sped off after the crash and has not been found. As a result, anyone with information on his whereabouts may call Templeton CHP at (805) 434-1822.
