Mitchell Reinitz and 2 Others Injured in Starting 3-Vehicle Crash on US 281 [Alice, TX]

Injuries Reported in Alice Multi-Vehicle Accident on US 281 and County Road 129

ALICE, TX (July 18, 2024) – Monday morning, Mitchell Reinitz and 2 others suffered injuries in a startling 3-vehicle crash on US 281.

The incident happened at 2:45 a.m. when a tractor-trailer traveled south on US 281 at County Road 129. Then, its tire blew out, leading the truck to land on its side and spill its contents on the highway.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the entire southbound lane of US-281 was blocked following an accident that left 48-year-old Ricardo Betancourt of Mission, Texas, injured.

Upon witnessing the accident, 67-year-old Reinitz of McAllen, Texas, stopped his vehicle to assist Betancourt. While Reinitz was aiding Betancourt, a second Freightliner traveling southbound on US-281 collided with the overturned trailer, resulting in injuries to Reinitz and the second truck’s driver, 38-year-old Jeffrey Walker of San Antonio.

The crash led to the closure of the southbound lanes of US-281 for several hours while investigators and first responders worked at the scene. The road was reopened around 10 a.m.

Betancourt and Walker were transported to a local hospital with severe injuries but are reported to be in stable condition. Reinitz was initially taken to a hospital in Alice but was later transferred to a hospital in Corpus Christi, where he remains in critical condition.
