Street Racing Leads to Fatal Accident on Interstate 15 Near State Route 163
MIRAMAR, CA (January 23, 2018) – A 27-year-old man was killed and several others injured in a domino car accident on Tuesday night around 10:13 PM, on the 15 freeway.
An Imperial Beach man driving a 2006 Honda Civic was reportedly driving recklessly and street-racing, according to CHP. The driver was going southbound on the 15, just north of State Route 163, when he changed lanes to the left and collided with a 2017 Subaru Outback that was driven by a 56-year-old San Diego woman.
The Honda then crashed with a 1998 Toyota Camry, driven by a 69-year-old San Diego woman. Veering toward the center divide, he crashed into a 2007 BMW 335i, driven by a 30-year-old La Mesa man. The car then proceeded to roll, ejecting the Imperial Beach man from the vehicle and thrown onto the road; his passenger, a 31-year old woman from Imperial Beach, sustained minor injuries.
Occupants of the other three cars were reported to be injured. The male and female from the Honda were transported to a nearby hospital, where the man succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced dead.
Police reports state that the Honda driver was not wearing a seat belt. Debris from the fatal collision was spread across most of the freeway. Lanes 3-8 were closed on southbound Interstate 15 for about 2.5 hours while authorities investigated and debris was cleared from the road.
Sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the victim.
