9-Year-Old Boy Loses Leg after Struck by Suspected DUI Driver on Del Rosa Avenue
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (May 5, 2018) – A 9-year-old boy was severely injured on Cinco de Mayo, following an incident involving a DUI driver in San Bernardino.
Michael Villalobos and his family were eating tacos from a street vendor on Del Rosa Avenue when a suspected DUI driver, Michael Clemmons, struck two parked vehicles in the area. The child was standing between the two cars and was pinned in the middle of them after the crash.
The incident severely crushed one of the boy’s legs, which had to be amputated later on. Michael is currently staying at Totally Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Loma Linda and is expected to remain there for at least six more months. Clemmons was charged with a felony DUI and driving on a suspended license and has since posted bail, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff teamed up with the Debbie Chisholm Memorial Foundation and the Sheriff’s Employee Benefit Association to give Michael a gift. The boy’s classmates from Victoria Elementary were also eager to cheer Michael up and gave him a personalized scrapbook. A GoFundMe page was created to assist Michael’s family with ongoing expenses.
