Driver Dies after Car Hits Tree Sparking Brush Fire at State Street and Soboba Road
SAN JACINTO, CA (September 1, 2019) – A driver was killed in a fiery crash early Sunday morning at the northern edge of San Jacinto, authorities said.
The crash happened around 1:06 a.m. at the intersection of State Street and Soboba Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2018 Dodge Charger was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck a tree. After the tremendous impact, the car exploded, sparking a brush fire.
Firefighters spent about thirty minutes knocking down the fire.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.
The Riverside County Coroner later identified the victim as Michael Vega, 46, of San Jacinto.
CHP has not yet ruled out alcohol and/or drug intoxication as possible contributing factors in the crash pending toxicology results. Further investigation is underway.
