Erratic Driver Dies when His Car Collides Head-On with Ambulance on Northeast 78th Street
VANCOUVER, WA (January 21, 2020) – A man died in a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in Northeast Hazel Dell.
The crash happened around 1:48 p.m. in the 3600 block of Northeast 78th Street.
According to witnesses, a 2007 Saturn Ion sedan was traveling erratically in and out of lanes. It then lost control and drove into oncoming traffic, crashing head-on with an AMR ambulance occupied by two paramedics.
The ambulance was not on a call and there was no patient inside.
First responders freed the driver of the Saturn from the wreckage, which took an extended amount of time. Medics performed life-saving measures on the driver, but he was later pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities later identified the deceased as Michael E. Ryan of Vancouver.
The two people inside the ambulance were injured, but they are expected to survive.
Officials closed the Northeast 78th Street between 25th Avenue and St. Johns Road while they investigated the crash.
