Wrong-Way Driver Kills Michael Johnston Jr. and Critically Injures Woman in Orange County
TUSTIN, CA (January 5, 2018) – Early Friday morning around 2:01 AM, a drunk driver drove the wrong direction on the 5 Freeway, killing one and injuring himself and another.
Ivan Gonzalez, 30, of Lake Forest was driving his 2008 Toyota Camry at speeds over 100 MPH when a CHP officer called for backup. Srgt. Todd Kovaletz said that officers tried to stop the suspect, but were unable to because of the speed that he was traveling.
Gonzalez was under the influence and driving with a suspended license when he entered the carpool lane of the northbound 5 freeway going south.
He rammed into a silver Ford Mustang 5 miles into the highway, killing 33-year-old Brea man, Michael Johnston Jr. and critically injuring 24-year-old female passenger from Burbank. Both Gonzalez and the woman were transported to the Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana for medical treatment.
After being deemed stable in the hospital, Gonzalez was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and felony vehicular manslaughter and transported to the county jail.
We wish the family and friends of Michael Johnston Jr. courage and patience in this tragic time.
