Car Catches Fire on Highway 99 in Merced Killing its Driver
MERCED, CA (December 30, 2018) – A 43-year-old Atwater man was killed following a fiery crash Sunday morning on the outskirts of Merced, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash happened around 10:43 a.m. on northbound Highway 99 at West 16th Street off-ramp.
CHP officials said a 2015 Ford Fiesta was exiting southbound Highway 99 at approximately 70 mph, when it veered off the roadway and slammed into a pillar below the highway. The car then burst into flames.
Several passing motorists stopped to assist, pulling the driver from the burning vehicle.
Responding emergency crews performed CPR on the man, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately available pending notification of his family members.
Witnesses told investigators there was no apparent evidence that the man attempted to stop the car or apply the brakes.
Traffic in the area was shut down for about two hours while the investigation was being conducted.
