72-Year-Old Melissa Bean Dies in Capsized Boat at Lake Powell
Page, AZ (July 28, 2024) – A boat capsized at Lake Powell on Friday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of two 4-year-old children and a 72-year-old Melissa Bean.
Around 3:15 p.m., the National Parks Service received an alert about a boat that had capsized while being towed by another boater near the mouth of Navajo Canyon.
Lake Powell is located northeast of Page, Arizona.
Rangers from the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area responded and found several passengers trapped under the overturned pontoon boat, which had 11 people on board.
Rescuers worked to pull the victims from the water, and medical attention was provided at the scene.
At least two individuals were transported by medical helicopter for further treatment.
Tragically, two 4-year-old children succumbed to their injuries, along with 72-year-old Melissa Bean.
It is unclear whether these individuals were among those transported to the hospital or were pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the deceased children have not been released.
The National Park Service, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the incident and the cause of the boat’s capsizing.
