Mother and Daughter Melanie and Khloie Valdez Dead in Merced County Accident on Highway 165
MERCED COUNTY, CA (May 9, 2021) – Saturday morning, Melanie Valdez, 42, and Khloie Valdez, 9, died in a crash on State Route 165 and Westside Boulevard.
CHP Officer Eric Zuniga said that the incident happened around 11:05 a.m. Moreover, the head-on crash occurred on State Route 165, south of Westside Boulevard in Hilmar.
According to reports, as the 42-year-old Stevinson woman, Melanie Valdez, drove a 2006 Kia Rio north on 165, she attempted to turn right.
Then, she overcorrected to the left and crashed with a southbound 2016 Chevy Silverado going on the highway.
“She went off the right shoulder and lost control and traveled in the path of the truck,” Zuniga revealed. “(The driver of the truck) attempted to avoid the vehicle but was unable to do it and hit the right rear of the Kia.”
The authorities confirmed that the Kia driver and her 9-year-old daughter, Khloie, failed to wear their seat belts. As a result, the impact ejected them from the car, and they died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the authorities said that a 32-year-old Modesto man drove the Chevy Silverado. Also, a 30-year-old woman rode in the truck, together with children ages 5, 10, and 11.
All of the five truck passengers wore seatbelts. Ultimately, responders took them to a Modesto-area hospital with minor injuries.
