30-Year-Old Man Killed, Leo Gorospe and Ida Gorospe Injured in Accident
FRESNO COUNTY, CA (May 5, 2018) – A Texas man died in Fresno County on Saturday afternoon, after careening into a ravine off of Interstate 5.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at around 3:40 PM. 30-year-old Mehrzad Monzavi of Texas was driving northbound on the 5 Freeway in a 2017 Ford Mustang north on 5 Freeway, just south of the Arroyo Hondo overcrossing. Monzavi attempted to pass a 2015 Winnebago that was driven by 66-year-old Leo Gorospe.
The Winnebago was towing a Chevrolet HHR and was driving at about 68 mph. 55-year-old Ida Gorospe was a passenger in the vehicle. The Mustang veered to the west shoulder edge of the freeway as the driver tried to pass the Winnebago. The left front of the Winnebago struck the right side of the Mustang, which caused the car to rotate in a clockwise direction. Both vehicles went off the east side of the road and down into a ravine, and a part of the Winnebago landed on top of the Mustang.
Monzavi was pronounced dead at the scene, while Leo and Ida suffered minor injuries and were rushed to the Community Regional Medical Center. Both Gorospes are from Livingston, Texas. There is no update on their current medical condition.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash according to California Highway Patrol.
