20-Year-Old Maya Thone Killed and Mukai Masayoshi Injured Near Flanagan Road
EL NIDO, CA (December 26, 2017) – Tuesday evening, CHP reported a solo car that crash involving a 2013 Nissan that had overturned into a ditch on Highway152, west of the Highway 59 Interchange in Merced County.
The driver, Mukai Masayoshi, 34, suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to the Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. The San Jose man was arrested on suspicion of DUI felony. His passenger, 20-year-old Maya Isabelle Thone of Pacifica, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have confirmed that drugs were a contributing factor to this fatal accident.
Officer Mike Mariscal of Los Banos said that upon his arrival on Tuesday evening, the vehicle was found flipped over, about 100 feet south of the highway.
Officers reported that Masayoshi was driving recklessly and at high speeds on the freeway going eastbound. He passed a vehicle, moving left into the middle of the highway, before losing control of his car while trying to re-enter the right lane. The vehicle spun off the road, and turned over multiple times before coming to a stop on the dirt field.
