Matthew Yu Dead in Vacaville Hit-and-Run Crash on 80 Freeway
VACAVILLE, CA (February 17, 2019) – A Brooklyn musician died in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash on 80 Freeway on Sunday, February 10.
The Solano County Coroner’s Office identified 34-year-old Matthew Yu, of Brooklyn, as the pedestrian killed near Dixon.
Yu had reportedly been walking in the No. 3 lane of 80 Freeway near Weber Road when a vehicle struck him. The driver did not stop and drove away. According to the California Highway Patrol, there have been no descriptions of the vehicle or driver from witnesses.
Santa Cruz Police department stated that Yu had been traveling the West Coast and was about to meet with friends in San Francisco on Feb. 8. However, he never showed up. He was last seen leaving the Starline Social Club in Oakland on Saturday in a ’50s Dodge Town Wagon together with a man named Nick Mamula.
Yu’s backpack and cellphone were found in Santa Cruz the same day. It is not yet determined how he ended up near Dixon or how he had gotten separated from Mamula.
On the Bandcamp page for Sapphire Mansions, which Yu had played lead guitar and organ in, lead singer Jay Hough stated that digital downloads of the band’s self-titled album would be available for free or at a pay-as-you-wish price. All download proceeds will go to Yu’s family.
