31-Year-Old Man Hospitalized after Hit-and-Run Crash on Sterling Road
BAKERSFIELD, CA (June 10, 2018) – A man was hospitalized early Sunday morning after he was struck by a pickup truck on Niles Street. 31-year-old Matthew Sullivan was later identified as the victim in the hit-and-run incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place shortly after midnight at the intersection of Niles Street and Sterling Road. Sullivan was entering the intersection’s crosswalk when he was hit by a westbound pickup truck, driven by an unidentified person.
Sullivan was transported to a nearby hospital after suffering major injuries, while the pickup driver reportedly fled from the scene.
The preliminary investigation suggests that Sullivan entered the crosswalk against a red light when he was hit by the truck passing through the intersection on a green light. Authorities claim that the driver attempted to avoid the pedestrian by swerving to the left, but Sullivan was still hit with the back right corner of the truck.
CHP described the pickup truck involved as a newer model Chevrolet or GMC pickup, dark colored, lowered with oversized rims and tires, and possibly with minor damage to its right side. Anyone with relevant information about this incident is encouraged to call Officer David Cabrera at (661) 396-6600.
