29-Year-Old Man Fatally Struck by Minivan on Highway 99 at Clovis Avenue
FOWLER, CA (September 27, 2019) – A man was killed in a pedestrian crash early Friday morning in Fowler, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash happened around 4:30 a.m. on northbound Highway 99, just south of Clovis Avenue exit.
CHP officials said a male pedestrian wearing dark clothing was walking against traffic when a white 2006 Dodge minivan hit him. The van was traveling at 55 to 60 mph and was unable to stop in time.
The driver, 61-year-old Jerome Fritas of Hanford, stopped and called 911.
Paramedics arrived soon after and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Matthew Rodrigues, 29.
During the investigation, it was determined that Rodrigues was a stranded driver whose white Nissan Murano had been disabled on the southbound side of the freeway. The Nissan was out of gas and had a flat tire.
It is unknown why Rodrigues was walking on the opposite side of the freeway.
Fritas was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
CHP closed the northbound slow and middle lanes for several hours while they investigated the incident.
We offer condolences to the family members of Matthew Rodrigues as they search for peace and comfort.
