25-Year-Old Sun Valley Motorcyclist Fatally Injured after Collision near 210 Freeway
SYLMAR, CA (September 17, 2018) – Late Monday morning, a motorcyclist was killed after a crash on the 5 Freeway. The deceased victim was later identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner as 25-year-old Matthew Lance Fielding of Sun Valley.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at approximately 11:08 AM, at the intersection of the 210 Freeway.
Prior to the accident, Fielding was speeding in his white Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on the I-5, approaching the 210 and a silver 2002 BMW that was in the No. 6 lane. For unknown reasons, the motorcycle collided with the right side of the vehicle.
Due to the impact of the collision, Fielding was ejected from the motorcycle, landing in the southbound truck lanes. He suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by responding emergency personnel. Both the driver of the BMW, identified as Angel Duran Mena of Pacoima, and a passenger, 19-year-old Katherinne Mejia of North Hollywood, were not injured in the accident.
Speed may have been a contributing factor in the fatal collision, but a thorough investigation is ongoing at this time to determine the cause. No additional information has been released to the public at this time, as officials continue to investigate.
