San Diego Navy Officer Fatally Injured in Accident near Coronado Bay Bridge
SAN DIEGO, CA (June 15, 2018) – A man was killed Friday morning after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle near the Coronado Bay Bridge. 24-year-old Lt Mason Calhoun was later identified as the casualty in this tragic incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly crash happened shortly before 9:30 AM on southbound I-5 near Cesar Chavez Parkway. A Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driven by Calhoun, was struck by a purple Chrysler PT Cruiser. The impact of the collision threw him onto the right shoulder of the freeway.
Events leading up to the collision were not immediately disclosed.
Medics found the rider unconscious and immediately performed life-saving efforts. Shortly after, Calhoun succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the PT Cruiser was reportedly unharmed and stayed to cooperate with the investigators.
The fatal crash temporarily shut down the southbound I-5 to the Coronado Bridge for approximately 20 minutes, while the two lanes approaching the bridge transition remained closed until after 10:00 AM. No additional information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
