Sisters Killed after Tourist Driver Runs Stop Sign at Road 22 and Avenue 24
CHOWCHILLA, CA (August 19, 2019) – Authorities identified 50-year-old Martina Gudino Vargas and 45-year-old Gregoria Gudino Vargas as the sisters killed in a crash in Madera County, Monday evening.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 6:00 PM. A rental Toyota Rav-4, driven by 55-year-old Agnelo Dsouza of Britain, failed to stop at a stop sign at Road 22 and Avenue 24. There, it broadsided an eastbound Saturn van.
The impact forced the Saturn into a power pole, knocking it down to the ground. Then, the Rav-4 careened into an irrigation ditch.
Unfortunately, the sisters in the Saturn van did not survive the collision. Meanwhile, emergency crews airlifted Dsouza and his wife to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries. Also, the driver and a passenger in the Saturn van suffered moderate injuries. However, their current conditions remain unknown to the public.
Officers say the driver could be facing criminal charges despite his foreign status. Authorities will release additional information following the conclusion of the investigation.
