Mark Shoemate of Aliso Viejo Arrested in 71 Freeway DUI Fatal Crash [Pomona, CA]

Pomona, CA (July 4, 2023) – On Sunday, 33-year-old Mark Shoemate of Aliso Viejo was arrested following a 71 Freeway DUI fatal crash.

The traffic accident happened at about 10 p.m. on the southbound freeway, north of Rio Rancho Road, wherein responding officers located a flatbed tow truck that had been struck by another vehicle.

“They discovered that a flatbed tow truck traveling northbound on SR-17 had been struck by another vehicle, causing the tow truck to jump the center divider into oncoming southbound traffic,” according to a police statement.

The tow truck crashed into a southbound van occupied by a family. A man inside the minivan was declared dead at the accident scene.

Officers said four people were transported to hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Moreover, officers arrested Shoemate, the tow truck driver, on suspicion of felony drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter.
