Pregnant Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver near Medical Center Drive
SAN BERNARDINO, CA (July 11, 2018) – A woman and her unborn child were killed late Wednesday evening after they were struck by a hit-and-run driver near Medical Center Drive.
According to the San Bernardino Police Department, the collision happened shortly before 11:30 PM on West Highland Avenue. The victim, 39-year-old Maribel Gonzalez, was walking southbound across Highland Avenue in a marked crosswalk when she was hit by a westbound vehicle.
Surveillance video showed that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit Gonzalez. The impact sent the victim about 150 feet down the street, while the driver continued to drive away from the scene. Authorities stated that the impact immediately killed Gonzalez, who was almost nine months pregnant at the time of the crash.
Witnesses claimed that the vehicle lost control before slamming into a nearby fence and bursting into flames. The driver, described as a woman, exited the burning vehicle and was picked up by a second car. There is no description of the suspect at this time.
