2 Killed and 2 Hospitalized in Walnut Grove Two-Vehicle Crash near 5 Freeway
WALNUT GROVE, CA (May 29, 2018) – Two people were killed Tuesday morning and two others were hospitalized after a head-on collision involving a pickup truck. 22-year-old Maria Silva Figueroa of Walnut Grove was identified as one of the fatalities in this incident.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at about 7:30 AM on Walnut Grove-Thornton Road, near the 5 Freeway. The preliminary investigation showed that an eastbound white Toyota Prius was trying to pass the slow traffic ahead by entering the opposing lane.
An oncoming pickup truck caused the Prius to swerve back to the eastbound lanes, but was unable to completely avoid the collision. The two vehicles crashed almost head-on.
Figueroa and a second occupant inside the Prius were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third passenger was airlifted to Kaiser South with major injuries. The driver of the pickup also sustained injuries and was also transported to Kaiser with moderate injuries. Their identities were not immediately disclosed.
An investigation is currently being handled by the California Highway Patrol and updates are expected once additional information is available.No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
