Maria Pelay and Refugio Olague Dead after Hanford Semi-Truck Incident
HANFORD, CA (July 3, 2019) – The CHP identified Maria Pelay and Refugio Olague as the deceased persons in a semi-truck crash in Hanford.
The accident occurred on Highway 43 near Idaho Avenue in Kings County shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday, July 1.
The California Highway Patrol said that a Freightliner turned in front of the Chevy. The Chevy was unable to stop or slow before it crashed into the right side of the semi-truck and become lodged beneath it.
CHP confirmed the driver of the SUV, 69-year-old Pelayo, and her passenger, 63-year-old Olague, died in the collision. Both were residents from Corcoran.
An 80-year-old male passenger in their vehicle sustained major injuries. Paramedics transported him to Kaweah Delta Hospital. His condition was unavailable.
The crash temporarily closed a section of Highway 43 for about three hours.
Authorities are still investigating what led to the incident.
