Speeding Driver Causes Fatal Crash at Artesia Boulevard and Vermont Avenue
GARDENA, CA (December 29, 2019) – Two people died in a high-speed crash early Sunday morning in Gardena.
The crash happened around 12:39 a.m. at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Vermont Avenue.
According to authorities, a black Tesla exited off the westbound 91 Freeway at a high rate of speed. It then ran a red light at the intersection and struck a Honda Civic.
As a result, the man and woman inside the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner’s office identified them as Maria Nieves-Lopez, 39, a Lynwood resident; and Gilberto Alcazar-Lopez, 40, who lived in Rancho Dominguez.
The two occupants in the Tesla, a man and a woman, were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
It is unknown if charges has been filed and liability has not yet been determined. Further investigation is underway.
