1 Dead in Tulare County Pedestrian Accident on Highway 99
TULARE COUNTY, CA (January 20, 2020) – A 26-year-old woman identified as Maria Herrera, of Porterville was killed on Highway 99 early Sunday morning.
Around 2:00 a.m., a pedestrian was seen down on the southbound lanes of the highway. Crews responded near the Avenue 80 off-ramp and located the unconscious female near a vehicle that was pulled over.
According to reports, a white 1983 Chevrolet was driving on the northbound ramp to Highway 99 in foggy conditions. There, the driver was unable to avoid striking Herrera, who was also dressed in dark clothing at the time.
Responders say two people occupied the vehicle that struck Herrera, however their identities have not been released.
Maria Herrera was transported to Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia for further treatment of life-threatening injuries. However, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Furthermore, the surrounding area was closed off while crews worked on their investigation. Authorities also later ruled out alcohol as a factor in the accident. Once available, more information will be released.
