19-Year-Old Corona Man Killed, Marcos Calderon Arrested in DUI Crash on 91 Freeway
Riverside, CA (April 07, 2021) – On Tuesday, a 19-year-old Corona man died and police arrested 25-year-old Marcos Calderon of Riverside in a DUI crash on the 91 Freeway.
The fatal accident happened at about 12:45 a.m. near Buchanan Street.
Calderon and the unidentified victim were both on a speed race when the incident happened.
Apparently, they both accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 mph trying to outmaneuver one another in eastbound lanes.
Calderon was driving a Nissan Altima, and the victim was driving a BMW 550 sedan.
Police said the two of them encountered slower traffic on the west end of Riverside. They lost control of their vehicles and drifted south off of the freeway.
Calderon’s vehicle stopped in a parking lot adjacent to the freeway, however, the BMW struck a tree and caught fire right away.
The victim was unable to exit his vehicle and perished before rescuers reached the scene and knocked down the fire.
Meanwhile, Calderon was examined at a hospital and was determined to be uninjured.
Lastly, officers arrested and booked him into the Robert Presley Jail on suspicion of drunk driving (DUI) and manslaughter engaging in an illegal speed contest and parole violations.
Information on his prior convictions was not immediately available.
