One Dies in Wrong-Way Accident Near Bloomfield Avenue
GILROY, CA (September 18, 2019) – Marcelino De Jesus-Santiago died in head-on crash on Highway 152 on Wednesday morning. He is a 27-year-old man from Merced County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened just east of Bloomfield Avenue and west of Lovers Lane before 8:00 AM. Based on a report, the victim’s 2014 Toyota Tacoma truck traveled eastbound on the highway at about 55 mph when a 2000 Ford Explorer driven at the wrong way by Phillip Romero, 31, crashed into him head-on.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office declared De Jesus-Santiago dead at the scene. His passenger, 27-year-old Delhi resident Sergio Cruz, was transported by ambulance to San Jose Regional Hospital with major injuries, while Romero was flown by CalStar helicopter to the same hospital due to major injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities are still determining whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
