OCEANSIDE, CA (February 26, 2020) – Sunday evening, a 23-year-old unidentified man was fatally struck by a car on the northbound lanes of 5 Freeway.
The incident occurred at 6:35 p.m. An ambulance was transporting the Oceanside man from Tri-City Medical Center to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in La Jolla at the time.
Reports indicate that the man jumped out of the moving ambulance before he was struck by an SUV. The man managed to get himself out of his restraints, open the rear door, and jump out near Birmingham Drive.
There, the man then ran toward the center divider and jumped over the median wall. He attempted to walk across the 5 Freeway. However, a silver BMW SUV driven by a 40-year-old Carlsbad woman, struck him shortly after.
Officials later confirmed that the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Meanwhile, the female driver suffered cuts to her head. She was later transported to a hospital for further treatment.
