Man Killed, Woman Injured in DUI Two-Vehicle Crash on 43rd Avenue [Phoenix, AZ]

David Leeshawn Johnson Arrested after DUI Fatal Crash on 43rd Avenue in Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ  (December 11, 2022) – Early Sunday morning, a male driver died, and a woman sustained severe injuries in a DUI fatal two-vehicle crash on 43rd Avenue and McLellan Boulevard.

Subsequently, police arrested 30-year-old David Leeshawn Johnson on suspicion of DUI.

The fatal head-on crash happened just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, just north of Maryland Avenue.

Phoenix Police said two vehicles collided head-on near 43rd Avenue and McLellan Boulevard.

Reportedly, Johnson was driving south when he crossed into the north lanes, hitting a sedan. The driver of the sedan died at the scene. 

A female passenger in Johnson’s vehicle sustained critical injuries. EMS rushed her to a hospital. 

Johnson reportedly admitted to officers that he had been drinking. His blood alcohol concentration came in at .089.

The victims’ identities haven’t been released.

Johnson is currently booked on one count of reckless manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault.

Further investigation is ongoing.
