Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle near Haniman Drive
SAN DIEGO, CA (October 17, 2018) – A man was killed in a pedestrian crash on 54th Street, early Wednesday morning. The victim was only identified as a 57-year-old man. His name and place of residence were not immediately released, pending notification of family.
According to officials with the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place at approximately 4:47 AM, near Haniman Drive.
Based on an initial report, the pedestrian was crossing the street at the intersection when he was struck by a Nissan. When rescuers arrived, the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from serious head injuries.
The Nissan driver continued about a block, parked her car and then walked back to check on the pedestrian, police said. She stayed on the scene until police arrived and cooperated with them during their investigation.
The initial investigation showed that the man was not in a crosswalk at the time he was struck. He had stepped into the southbound lane moments before the collision. Drugs and alcohol were not considered to be contributing factors in the fatal incident. No charges have been filed at this time, and no further details have been disclosed as the authoyieis continue to investigate.
