Rachel Payne Injured in Fatal Salinas Crash on Highway 101
SALINAS, CA (June 19, 2019) – A man was killed following a rollover crash Wednesday morning in Salinas.
Officers responded to the scene on northbound Highway 101 at Potter Road after receiving reports of the crash at about 9:45 a.m.
According to reports, a 31-year-old Gonzales man was driving a black 2011 BMW southbound when for unknown reasons, it crossed the median into the northbound lanes, hitting a black Jeep Cherokee.
The Jeep lost control, hit traffic signs and came to a stop in a southbound lane of the highway, blocking one lane. The BMW continued through a ditch and fence before landing on its roof in a work yard off of Potter Road.
The unidentified BMW driver died at the scene.
Paramedics took the 25-year-old BMW passenger, also from Gonzales, to Natividad Medical Center with minor injuries.
The driver of the Jeep, a 28-year-old Rachel Payne of Gonzales, was also injured and hospitalized. Her 27-year-old passenger Justin Payne, also of Gonzales, was not injured.
The crash slowed traffic but all lanes were open as of 11:16 a.m.
CHP does not believe that alcohol or drugs have played a role in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
Our condolences remain with the family and friends of the deceased. We hope they are brought peace and comfort at this time.
