Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Crash on 5 Freeway in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA (August 4, 2019) – A man was killed following a pedestrian hit-and-run crash Sunday morning in the Pacific Beach area.

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. on northbound 5 Freeway at the Grand Avenue off-ramp. A white Volkswagen Passat struck the pedestrian, according to witnesses. As a result, the victim flew through the air and landed in the right shoulder.

Arriving paramedics took the victim to Scripps Hospital La Jolla. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Volkswagen fled the scene after the crash, but found later parked around the corner from a house in a Clairemont Mesa neighborhood, officials said.

Someone was contacted at the residence but would not open the door, according to CHP dispatcher. That person was taken into custody, but officers were not sure whether the individual being held was the car’s driver.

The incident remains under investigation.
