Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Three Cars on 8 Freeway in El Cajon
EL CAJON, CA (July 25, 2019) – A man was killed in a pedestrian crash Thursday evening on 8 Freeway in El Cajon, the California Highway Patrol said.
The CHP received reports of a male pedestrian walking on the westbound lanes of 8 Freeway, around 9:30 p.m.
Officers contacted the man who fled the freeway through a perimeter fence. However, he eventually headed back toward westbound traffic by walking up the East Main Street off-ramp.
According to reports, the man was acting irrationally, and officers believe he may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Authorities began running traffic breaks on both sides of the freeway in an attempt to stop traffic. However, a westbound Nissan Sentra driven by a 60-year-old woman eventually struck the man.
After the initial collision, the man managed to get up and run into eastbound traffic. There, he was also struck by a Lexus IS 200 sedan driven by a 45-year-old Lakeside man.
Finally, a Honda Accord driven by a 22-year-old woman also struck him.
The unidentified pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene before he could be taken to a hospital for treatment.
Furthermore, authorities also shut down all eastbound lanes near East Main Street, and several on-ramps during the investigation. The closure lasted about an hour, until authorities later reopened one of three eastbound lanes around 10:45 p.m.
No further information has been released to the public at this time. However, more details will be released once available.
