1 Dead and Injuries Reported in Santa Cruz Multi-Vehicle Accident on Highway 1
SANTA CRUZ, CA (March 29, 2021) – Thursday afternoon, a 27-year-old man from Watsonville died in a four-vehicle crash on Highway 1.
CHP officer Alyssa Gutierrez revealed that the incident happened at 4:30 p.m. According to Guttierrez, a 77-year-old Moss Landing man drove south on Highway 1 in a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. Then, his car crashed into a Watsonville male resident driving a 2018 Honda Civic.
Afterward, the Civic then collided with a 29-year-old male driver of a 2016 Toyota Corolla with a 26-year-old female passenger.
A CALSTAR air ambulance transported the Watsonville man to an out-of-county trauma center where he succumbed to his injuries. The authorities also confirmed that he wore a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Meanwhile, the Avalanche also hit a 27-year-old Aptos man driving a Chevrolet Impala.
As a result, the Moss Landing man sustained moderate injuries. Meanwhile, the male and female occupants in the Toyota sustained minor injuries.
Guttierez said that drugs or alcohol didn’t play a role in the crash.
The driver of the Impala sustained no injuries.
As a result of the crash, the CHP closed all lanes of southbound traffic on Highway 1 for close to an hour. Thus, the rush hour traffic has been stalled up north into Santa Cruz, and up Highway 17. Car parts and shattered glasses were scatted at the crash scene.
The authorities continue to investigate the collision.
